The name Sumo Tinto most often refers to the Alicante Bouschet variety, bred by crossing Petit Bouschet and Grenache. It is a heat-loving wine grape variety of the mid-maturity group with colored pulp and juice, used for the production of full-bodied red wines and blends.
This name may also refer to the Grand Noir variety, obtained by crossing Petit Bouschet and Aramon. The variety is distinguished by late bud burst and high yield, but it is sensitive to Oidium. It is used as a teinturier variety to impart deep color to wines.
