The variety is of French origin and has been known since the 13th century. The berries are dark blue, almost black in color, characterized by a very thick skin and containing five seeds. The clusters are medium-sized and cylindrical-conical in shape; the leaves are dense, rounded, and slightly dissected.
The variety has low to below-average yields, which contributes to a high concentration of substances in the berries. Tannat adapts well to temperature fluctuations and drought, yet it shows weak resistance to fungal diseases.
Wine from this variety is characterized by extreme astringency and full body, requiring aging or blending to soften the taste. Upon maturation, notes of dark berries, spices, coffee, chocolate, and licorice develop in the wine.
