The variety belongs to the noble varieties of Madeira, although its exact origin remains unknown. After the epidemics of powdery mildew and phylloxera in the second half of the 19th century, the plant was on the verge of extinction; in the early 21st century, work began on its restoration.
The plant is distinguished by very low yield and high sensitivity to rot, requiring professional care. Morphologically, the variety is characterized by small, pale-green berries.
The grapes are used exclusively for the production of fortified wines, in which the content of this variety must be at least 85 percent. The resulting product possesses high aging potential, a complex aroma, and a balance of sweetness and acidity.
