The variety is indigenous to Pico Island and is not related to the Terrantez variety from Madeira Island. It is an ancient traditional variety that is not the result of targeted breeding and was restored after being on the verge of extinction.

The grape is considered a capricious and unpredictable crop with low productivity, but has the ability to accumulate high levels of sugar and acid. On Pico Island, the vines are grown on volcanic lava and protected from winds and salty oceanic air by special basalt walls called currais.

The wine grape is used for the production of dry and fortified white wines, possessing a distinct volcanic character with notes of minerality, iodine, sea salt, and citrus. The population of the variety is extremely small, which makes it one of the rarest grape varieties in the world.
