The variety is an autochthon of the Istria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The crop is characterized by medium to high vine vigor and high productivity. Bunches are medium-sized, cylindrical or conical in shape, and compact. Berries are dark blue, almost black in color, with thick skin, heavy bloom, and intensely colored juicy pulp.

The variety prefers karst and red soils rich in iron. Resistance to fungal diseases is assessed as medium; the variety is sensitive to high humidity and intense sun exposure, but possesses good frost resistance.

Wines made from Teran grapes have a deep ruby color with a violet hue and aromas of wild berries, violets, and spices. Genetically, the variety differs from the Refošk variety, with which it is sometimes identified in winemaking.
