The variety is a light-skinned mutation of the red grape Trousseau noir. The berries have a grayish skin tint, a fleshy structure, and juice that is difficult to extract; clusters are small in size. The origin of the variety is most often associated with the Jura region in France.
The variety belongs to the wine grape category and is sensitive to fungal diseases, including grey mold. Despite its ability to adapt to drought, the variety produces the highest quality harvest with pronounced acidity and floral-fruity notes when cultivated in a cool climate.
The grape possesses a high potential for sugar accumulation and is used to create dry, dessert, fortified, and sparkling wines, as well as in blends. In the USA, the variety was historically known by the name Gray Riesling, despite not being related to the Riesling variety.
