When selecting cultivars for creating a border, plant habit and growth rate are of key importance. The cultivar should possess a compact, dense crown or a dense leaf rosette, which allows the plants to close into a continuous ribbon without gaps. The stability of decorative qualities throughout the entire season and the ability to tolerate regular pruning to maintain a specific geometric shape are also evaluated.

The effectiveness of border plantings depends on adherence to cultivation rules, including increased planting density of up to 15 plants per linear meter.
