When selecting cultivars for creating a border, plant habit and growth rate are of key importance. The cultivar should possess a compact, dense crown or a dense leaf rosette, which allows the plants to close into a continuous ribbon without gaps. The stability of decorative qualities throughout the entire season and the ability to tolerate regular pruning to maintain a specific geometric shape are also evaluated.

The effectiveness of border plantings depends on adherence to cultivation rules, including increased planting density of up to 15 plants per linear meter. Maintenance of such plantings requires regular trimming or removal of flower stalks, as well as strict consideration of the ecological requirements of a specific zone, such as light levels and soil type, which ensures the preservation of the uniformity of the living line.
