Pelargonium propagation by cuttings

Pelargonium L'Hér. ex Ait.

The primary method of vegetative propagation for Pelargonium, which preserves varietal characteristics. The process is based on the use of terminal or single-node cuttings with high rooting plasticity.

For propagation, terminal shoots 5–15 cm in length are used; manual detachment of the shoot is the preferred method to prevent the spread of diseases. In professional propagation, single-node cuttings from the lower part of the stem are also used, provided that the node was not a flower-bearing one, as such buds do not produce vegetative growth.

Pelargonium is prone to callus formation prior to root emergence, which requires control of substrate moisture to prevent rotting. The optimal time for the process is spring, although the high plasticity of the crop allows for year-round propagation. While Pelargonium zonale is capable of rooting without greenhouse conditions, Pelargonium grandiflorum requires a strict temperature and light regime.
