A classification trait of winter rye, determined by the duration of the period from emergence to full maturity, used for harvest planning and managing the risks of pre-harvest sprouting.

In state variety testing, winter rye is divided into groups based on the length of the growing season: early-maturing varieties ripen in up to 100 days, mid-early in 101–110 days, mid-maturing in 111–120 days, while mid-late and late-maturing require 121–130 days or more.
The choice of maturity group is a key tool in rye agronomy, given the short seed dormancy period and the crop's susceptibility to pre-harvest sprouting in the ear when left standing too long or under conditions of excessive moisture. Using varieties with different ripening times allows for the uniform distribution of the workload for harvesting machinery and the adaptation of crops to the sum of active temperatures of a specific climatic zone.
