Planting density is measured in thousands or millions of plants per hectare and determines the area of nutrition for each individual specimen. At an optimal value, plants utilize light, moisture, and nutrients most efficiently. In the case of high-density crops, intraspecific competition occurs, leading to stem elongation, weakening of the root system, and an increased risk of lodging, whereas in sparse crops, resources are not fully utilized and the area becomes overgrown with weeds.

Different varieties respond differently to stress factors; therefore, recommendations for planting density should always comply with the characteristics of the specific hybrid or variety provided by the breeder.
