The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae can parasitize mullein. When infested, light-colored stippling appears on the leaves, which eventually merges, causing yellowing and a mottled leaf appearance, while webbing becomes visible on the underside of the leaf blade.
In greenhouse practice, the Verbascum thapsus species of mullein is often used as a banker plant. It is grown to maintain populations of beneficial entomophages, such as the predatory bug Dicyphus hesperus, which effectively suppress spider mite populations both on the mullein itself and on neighboring vegetable crops.
