Growing Clematis in containers requires consideration of its sensitivity to root overheating, the necessity of deep planting of the root collar, and a significant reduction in winter hardiness due to root ball freezing.

Clematis require large containers with a volume of 12–20 liters and a depth of at least 45 cm, made of materials with low thermal conductivity to prevent overheating of the sensitive root system. It is essential to provide quality drainage and install supports immediately at planting to prevent future root damage.

When planting, the crop-specific rule of burying the root collar 5–10 cm deep to stimulate tillering is maintained. Due to the risk of summer soil overheating, it is recommended to use underplanting with annuals, and during the winter period, to provide protection against pot freezing, as the winter hardiness of container-grown plants is reduced by an average of two zones.

For container cultivation, compact varieties up to 1–2 meters in height are preferred, which helps balance the development of the aerial part with the limited volume of the root system.
