Cultivation
Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.
A method of growing apple trees in a limited volume of substrate using dwarfing rootstocks or columnar varieties. It requires strict control of nutrition, irrigation, substrate composition, and the provision of a dormancy period for chilling requirements.
In the reference 41 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.
For container cultivation of apple trees, the selection of rootstock is critical. Exclusively dwarfing and super-dwarfing clonal rootstocks, such as M9, M26, PB-4, or Malysh Budakovskogo, are used to balance the development of the root system and the aerial part. Vigorous rootstocks are ineffective, and an excessive combination of a weak rootstock and a weak scion may lead to tree suppression.
Container agrotechnics require the use of loose substrates, for example, peat moss with perlite, to prevent compaction. Due to the risk of drying out and overheating of the roots, thermal insulation of containers is necessary, and due to root system freezing in pots, they must be covered or moved to a non-freezing room for the winter. A prerequisite for fruiting is compliance with a dormancy period with the accumulation of 800 to 1000 chilling hours at temperatures from 0 to +7 °C.
Columnar apple forms are genetically the best adapted for container cultivation due to their vertical growth habit and compactness. Unlike many other plants, apple trees react extremely poorly to root damage, so when replacing a container, only the transfer method is permissible without disturbing the integrity of the root ball.
