Forage Turnip

The forage use of turnip is implemented through the stubble turnip group, valued for the high yield of roots and leaves, cold tolerance, and a short growing season.

For forage purposes, turnip (stubble turnip) is grown for biomass, reaching 400–1000 c/ha of root crops and 150 c/ha of leaves. The biological plasticity of the crop allows it to be used as a stubble crop, as seedlings can withstand frosts down to –5°C and roots down to –7°C, with a growing period of 70–100 days.

The utilization technology involves grazing livestock directly in the field, where the above-ground part is consumed first, followed by the roots. The nutritional value of stubble turnip is based on its high sugar and protein content; however, due to the presence of mustard oils, the diet of animals must be restricted to prevent spoilage of milk flavor.
