Fodder use of yellow lupine

Lupinus luteus L.

Yellow lupine is a valuable fodder crop for sandy soils, characterized by high protein content and the ability to regrow after mowing. The use of modern low-alkaloid varieties allows it to be included in animal diets without complex pre-processing.

In the reference 36 varieties crop Yellow lupin, where this is mentioned in the description.

Yellow lupine grain contains 39–44% crude protein, while its green mass contains about 20%. Unlike other lupine species, it is better adapted to growing on poor sandy and acidic soils, actively fixing nitrogen. Its vegetative mass is characterized by stems that remain succulent for a long time, and its ability to regrow after mowing makes the crop an important component of the green forage supply.

In modern fodder production, exclusively “sweet” low-alkaloid varieties are used, the seeds of which do not contain trypsin inhibitors, which eliminates the need for heat treatment. To improve feed digestibility in pigs, seed decortication is effective. In agronomic practice, to obtain balanced nutrition, lupine is often sown in mixtures with oats or maize.
