Cultivation

Forage use of common vetch

Vicia sativa L.

Common vetch is valued as a high-protein forage crop with a crude protein content of 20–22% and high digestibility. Due to its susceptibility to lodging, it is primarily grown in mixed stands with cereals, and the use of its grain is limited by the presence of anti-nutritional factors.

In the reference 74 varieties crop Common vetch, where this is mentioned in the description.

The green mass of common vetch possesses high nutritional value, approaching that of red clover. 1 kg of green mass contains approximately 34 g of digestible protein, rich in lysine and tryptophan. The optimal harvesting periods for hay and haylage are the flowering phase and the beginning of lower pod formation, as delayed mowing leads to stem coarsening and a decline in forage quality.

The cultivation technology for this crop requires the mandatory use of cereal components as support for the vetch's thin stems, which facilitates mechanized harvesting and allows for balancing animal rations with carbohydrates. Vetch grain contains anti-nutritional compounds, such as cyanogenic glycosides and trypsin inhibitors, which necessitates caution when incorporating it into the diets of livestock and poultry.
