Zantedeschia Rhizome

In the genus Zantedeschia, the rhizome is a species-specific organ characteristic of Zantedeschia aethiopica, in contrast to the tuberous species Z. elliottiana and Z. rehmannii. The physical parameters of the rhizome, such as mass and diameter, correlate directly with generative productivity: for optimal flowering, the diameter of the planting material should be 2–3 cm.

Cultivation techniques are based on assessing the condition of the rhizome: firmness, absence of rot, and the presence of active buds. The planting depth is determined by the size of the organ and is 2–3 times its diameter, as deviating from this parameter negatively affects tissue aeration and may lead to stem lodging.

The rhizome serves as the primary method of vegetative propagation through the division of mature specimens. Being the main reservoir of nutrients, this organ also acts as the primary target for bacterial and fungal infections, requiring strict phytosanitary control during storage and planting.
