Downy Mildew of Grapevine

Vitis vinifera L.

A fungal disease of grapevines caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola, affecting all green parts of the plant. It is characterized by the appearance of "oil" spots on leaves and a white sporulation bloom under high humidity conditions.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Common grape vine, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the obligate parasite Plasmopara viticola. The pathogen infects the non-lignified parts of the vine, including leaves, shoots, inflorescences, and berries. On young leaves, the disease manifests as "oil" spots with a greasy sheen, while on older leaves, they acquire an angular shape. Under high humidity, a whitish-gray sporulation bloom develops on the underside of the leaf, after which the affected tissues undergo necrosis.

Infection of inflorescences and young berries is accompanied by the appearance of a gray bloom and subsequent rotting. On mature berries, the disease manifests as "brown rot," in which the fruits wither, darken, and mummify. Since most Vitis vinifera cultivars are susceptible to the pathogen, breeding is conducted using Rpv resistance genes borrowed from wild species, such as Rpv3, Rpv10, and Rpv12.
