An integral indicator of barley grain plumpness and density, expressed in grams at a standard moisture content of 14%. It is a key factor for calculating seeding rates and estimating the crop's yield potential.

To determine this indicator, two parallel 500-kernel samples are taken from an average sample of cleaned barley seeds and weighed with an accuracy of 0.01 g. The final 1000-kernel weight value is calculated as the sum of the weights of these two samples.

Barley 1000-kernel weight values are subject to significant varietal and environmental variability. Values below 35 g usually correspond to unfavorable conditions or drought, while 40–45 g are considered a good level. Varieties with a 1000-kernel weight of over 50 g, capable of reaching 59 g, are considered large-seeded.

A high grain weight indicates the accumulation of a large reserve of nutrients, which promotes the formation of vigorous seedlings and increases productivity. The use of this parameter is necessary to transition from a weight-based seeding rate to a quantitative calculation of viable seeds per hectare to ensure optimal plant density.
