Frost Hardiness of Sweet Cherry

Prunus avium (L.) L.

The ability of sweet cherry tissues and generative buds to maintain viability when exposed to low winter temperatures, thaws, and spring frosts.

The assessment of sweet cherry frost hardiness includes the analysis of resistance to early autumn frosts, maximum endurance during the deep dormancy period, tolerance to thaws, and the ability to re-harden. The primary methods of determination are field observations of tissue conditions and artificial freezing in climate chambers.

Test results are recorded in tissue damage scores or the percentage of dead buds and flowers. The critical threshold for most varieties is a temperature below –26 °C for generative buds and down to –30 °C for wood, although modern breeding forms are capable of withstanding frosts down to –35 °C.

The trait of frost hardiness is determined by the genetic characteristics of the variety and the properties of the clonal rootstock. Under production conditions, resistance is managed through agronomic practices aimed at timely shoot maturation, as well as the selection of sites with an optimal light regime.
