Powdery mildew of Tiarella

A fungal disease of Tiarella cordifolia caused by the pathogen Golovinomyces orontii. It manifests as a characteristic white powdery coating on the vegetative and generative organs of the plant.

The primary pathogen of powdery mildew on Tiarella cordifolia is the fungus Golovinomyces orontii from the Erysiphaceae family. In current scientific literature, there is no data regarding the differentiation of this pathogen into specialized races or pathotypes that affect the crop.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of a white or grayish-white coating consisting of mycelium and conidia on the surface of leaves, stems, and peduncles. The infection leads to the deformation of leaf blades, their premature abscission, and an overall reduction in the ornamental qualities of the Tiarella.

Disease development is promoted by microclimate disturbances, including stagnant air and poor ventilation, as well as excessive nitrogen fertilization, which induces vigorous growth of susceptible tissues. Specific resistance genes to this disease in Tiarella cultivars have not been described in breeding practice.
