The variety forms a compact rosette 18–25 cm in height; with flower stalks, the plant reaches 35–40 cm. The leaves are deeply dissected, palmately lobed, dark green with a characteristic dark pattern, which may take on a bronze or purple-black hue in winter.

The plant is used as a ground cover for shaded areas and rock gardens. The flowering period occurs in April–May. The variety is characterized by USDA hardiness zones 4–9, but is sensitive to waterlogging and susceptible to powdery mildew, slugs, and weevils.
