Powdery Mildew of Soft Wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

A fungal disease of soft wheat caused by the specialized pathogen Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, affecting the above-ground organs of the plant. The disease leads to a reduction in photosynthesis, the formation of shriveled grain, and empty ears.

In the reference 1 157 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the obligate biotroph Blumeria graminis (DC.) Speer f. sp. tritici Marchal. Symptoms appear as a white, web-like coating on leaves, leaf sheaths, and stems, which eventually thickens into cotton-like patches; at the final stage, cleistothecia—black dots representing the fruiting bodies—form on the mycelium.

The harmfulness of powdery mildew lies in the destruction of chlorophyll and the retardation of tillering processes. Pathogen populations are characterized by high variability in virulence, which allows them to overcome specific varietal resistance genes denoted by the symbol Pm (Powdery mildew).

Breeding for resistance relies on the use of more than 30 Pm loci, including their allelic variants. Due to the adaptability of the fungus, breeding practices involve the "pyramiding" of several genes within a single genotype to ensure durability of resistance, with some resistance genes potentially being linked to protection genes against other pathogens.
