Flower color is a stable morphological trait of a variety used to confirm its identity, purity, and uniformity. It is determined by the genetic composition of pigments and may vary under the influence of environmental factors.

Flower color is a basic morphological indicator used in variety testing protocols for the identification, distinctness, uniformity, and stability of a cultivar. The manifestation of this trait serves as a marker of varietal purity: the appearance of plants with a different color in the field indicates non-uniformity or biological contamination.

The manifestation of the trait depends on the genetic composition of pigments, such as anthocyanins and carotenoids, as well as on external conditions: light intensity, temperature regime, and soil acidity. During the flower's life cycle, its color may change in a predictable manner, which is taken into account during field inspection.

The trait is assessed visually or quantitatively using specialized color charts, such as the RHS scale, to ensure the standardization of descriptions. In professional breeding, the concept of a 'high' or 'low' color value is replaced by the requirement of strict adherence to the reference description of a specific variety.
