Variety traits
Hydrangea serrata (Thunb.) Ser. var. serrata
The color of sterile sepals in Hydrangea serrata is a variable trait depending on soil acidity and aluminum availability. In neutral or slightly alkaline conditions, the color ranges from pink to red, while in acidic conditions, it shifts to blue, light blue, or violet.
In the reference 30 varieties crop Tea-of-heaven, where this is mentioned in the description.
The physiological mechanism of color change is based on the plant's ability to absorb aluminum in an acidic environment, which leads to the formation of blue and violet shades. In the absence of sufficient aluminum or when soil pH increases to neutral values, the inflorescences acquire a pink or red color.
The trait is qualitative and is assessed visually using expert decorative scales during key flowering phases. For a number of cultivars, dynamic variability of shades throughout the season is characteristic, while the color of fertile and sterile flowers within the same inflorescence may differ.
Technological color control is achieved by regulating soil acidity within the pH 5.5–6.5 range. The intensity of the color also depends on light exposure, which influences the expression of cultivar characteristics documented in breeding records.
