Hydrangea serrata forms flower buds on the previous year's shoots; therefore, maintaining the integrity of the wood and apical buds is a prerequisite for flowering. Despite the potential cold hardiness of some cultivars down to −24 °C, practical cultivation requires protection to prevent frost damage.
The preparation method includes minimal sanitary pruning without removing previous year's shoots, removal of leaves to prevent rotting, and application of potassium-phosphorus fertilizers in September. The covering involves mounding the base, pinning the shoots to the ground, and creating an air-dry frame insulated against moisture, which fundamentally distinguishes it from Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens, which bloom on current year's shoots.
