Pea Shattering

Pisum sativum L.

A pea agronomic trait determining the ability of seeds to remain in the pods during maturation. It is critical for mechanized harvesting and minimizing yield losses.

The evaluation of pea shattering is conducted on a 5-point scale, where 5 points are assigned to varieties resistant to shattering and suitable for full mechanized harvesting. Low scores indicate premature shedding of seeds from the pods, which complicates combine harvesting and leads to direct yield losses.

Genetically, the shattering trait is associated with the formation of an abscission layer between the funiculus and the seed coat. Resistance to shattering is conditioned by the recessive allele def, which blocks the seed detachment mechanism, whereas the dominant allele Def promotes shattering.

For modern production, non-shattering is a key breeding requirement that allows for direct combining without the need for two-phase harvesting. Selecting varieties with a high score for this indicator is a necessary condition for preserving the total yield.
