Savoy cabbage cultivation in the open field is characterized by the crop's high frost resistance, which allows heads to remain under snow, and a specific temperature regime during seedling establishment.

Savoy cabbage is the most cold-hardy type among brassicas: its seedlings can withstand frosts down to -3 °C, and mature plants of late-maturing varieties can tolerate temperature drops to -5...-6 °C. Due to the crinkled structure of the leaves and a looser head, the planting spacing can vary from 35 to 60 cm depending on the variety.
During the seedling adaptation period in the open field, irrigation is required every three days, followed by a transition to a weekly schedule. The crop is more drought-tolerant than other cabbage types, but it is demanding regarding crop rotation due to its susceptibility to clubroot, which requires a 4–5 year break before returning to the same site.
