Gladiolus agronomy in open fields is characterized by a mandatory cycle in which planting material is removed from the soil for winter storage. Planting should only be carried out when the soil at a depth of 10 cm has warmed to +8…+10 °C, as lower temperatures delay rooting and provoke the development of fungal diseases.

To prevent corm rot, the soil must be loose and neutral (pH 6.9–7.0), and sand or vermiculite should be used during planting to ensure basal drainage. Planting depth varies from 5 to 20 cm depending on the size of the corm; it is important to maintain spacing for air circulation and to change the planting site annually to control the accumulation of inoculum.
