Winter and spring forms of triticale

The differentiation of triticale into winter and spring forms is determined by the genetic control of vernalization requirements via Vrn genes inherited from wheat and rye.

In winter forms of triticale, all Vrn genes are recessive, which causes an obligate requirement for a period of low temperatures to transition to reproductive development. Spring forms possess dominant alleles, allowing them to develop without prior vernalization.

The triticale genome, as an amphidiploid, contains both wheat Vrn-A1 and Vrn-B1 loci and the rye Vrn-R1 gene on chromosome 5RL. Winter forms are characterized by high frost resistance and the ability to resume vegetation early, whereas spring varieties have a longer growing season and require the earliest possible sowing dates.
