Lolium perenne L.
This trait determines the morphology, nutritional value, and application of perennial ryegrass. Varieties are categorized into diploids with a set of 2n = 14 and tetraploids with double the DNA content.

To determine the ploidy of perennial ryegrass, flow cytometry is used to measure the nuclear DNA content. Diploid forms (2n = 14) are characterized by a typical DNA content of approximately 5.60 pg/2C, whereas artificially created tetraploid forms (4n) have an average of about 11.45 pg/2C.
Diploid varieties are distinguished by thin leaves and high tillering density, making them the standard for lawns resistant to trampling and low mowing. Tetraploid varieties form larger plants with wide leaves and are characterized by high sugar content, increased digestibility, intensive growth, and better winter hardiness, which defines their priority use in forage production.
