Lodging in hulless oats

Avena nuda L.

Lodging is a critical factor in reducing the productivity of hulless oats, impeding photosynthesis, grain maturation, and mechanized harvesting.

In the reference 27 varieties crop Naked oat, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate the lodging resistance of hulless oats, a five-point scale is used, where low scores correspond to high resistance. For a more objective characterization, methods of analyzing stem morphological parameters are employed, including the Atkins-Korostelev method, which determines the weight per unit length of the straw, and the calculation of indices for the length-to-diameter ratio of the lower internodes.

In hulless oat breeding, a negative correlation has been identified between plant height and lodging resistance. Striking a balance between productivity and stem strength remains an important task, as tall-growing varieties have a higher propensity for lodging, which necessitates the consideration of morphometric indices when evaluating varietal traits.
