Gladiolus lodging

Gladiolus L.

Gladiolus lodging is caused by tall growth, the wind resistance of fan-shaped leaves, and the heavy weight of the inflorescence. It is a critical breeding trait that reduces decorative value and the marketability of cut flowers under windy conditions or excessive nitrogen nutrition.

The lodging trait in gladiolus is closely related to plant morphology, where the flower stalk often accounts for more than half of the total height. Tall flower stalks are prone to leaning and bending, which necessitates the use of stakes for support or hilling up to 10 centimeters to maintain a vertical position.

During variety trials, lodging resistance is evaluated on a 5-point visual scale, where 5 points correspond to fully resistant plants and 1 point to mass lodging. The assessment records the growth stage, causes of bending, and genetic predisposition of the cultivar, which determines the need to locate plantings in wind-protected areas.
