Lodging in barley

A condition in which barley stems deviate from the vertical towards the ground, critically reducing yield and grain quality, especially for malting purposes. Resistance of varieties is assessed on a 5-point scale during state variety trials.

The assessment of barley lodging resistance is carried out visually on a 5-point scale, where 5 points correspond to non-lodging erect crops, and 1 point to crops that have lodged long before harvest and are unsuitable for mechanized processing. Observations are conducted from the moment the symptoms appear until harvest, recording the ability of stems to straighten, the type of lodging (root or stem), and its character.

Lodging in barley leads to a decrease in 1000-grain weight by 20–30% due to impaired nutrition and photosynthesis, and also provokes the development of fungal diseases and grain spoilage. In malting production, this factor is critical, as it causes changes in protein composition and reduces the technological qualities of the raw material, which requires strict control of seeding rates and nitrogen nutrition.
