Variety traits
Triticum aestivum L.
Lodging in soft wheat is the process of stem curvature or leaning, leading to reduced yield and grain quality deterioration due to impaired photosynthesis and grain-filling conditions.
In the reference 1 845 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
To evaluate the lodging resistance of wheat varieties, a five-point visual scale, a quantitative lodging index, and instrumental methods for measuring stem breaking strength or the I.Ya. Korostelev method are used. Highly resistant varieties maintain a vertical position under conditions of excessive moisture and strong winds, whereas susceptible forms are characterized by greater plant height and insufficient lignin content in the straw.
Lodging negatively affects test weight, promotes the development of fungal diseases, and creates harvesting difficulties. A key selection tool for improving lodging resistance is the introduction of Rht dwarfing genes, which allow for the development of short-statured plants with a strengthened mechanical stem structure.
