The productivity of common wheat is evaluated as a complex of structural elements of the spike and the plant that determine the final yield, expressed in tonnes per hectare.

The main elements of productivity include grain weight per plant or spike, productive tillering, the number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, linear spike density, and the number of spikelets. To assess these indicators, breeders use specialized indices that compare grain weight with plant height, and they also analyze the stability of traits in field variety trials using coefficients of variation and regression.
The yield of common wheat is highly dependent on growing conditions: in global practice, figures vary from average values of about 1.18 t/ha to high yields in favorable conditions, reaching 8.2 t/ha or more. An important characteristic is the combination of potential productivity with adaptability to stress factors, while the economic significance of the yield is always considered in conjunction with grain quality parameters, such as test weight, protein content, and gluten content.
