A quarantine disease of potato caused by the parasitic fungus Synchytrium endobioticum, which affects tubers, stolons, and stems of the plant. It manifests as characteristic outgrowths resembling cauliflower florets in shape.

The causative agent of the disease is the obligate chytrid fungus Synchytrium endobioticum, which persists in the soil in the form of resting zoosporangia for up to 30 years. The pathogen affects all parts of the potato plant except for the roots. The fungus possesses high parasitic plasticity, forming specialized pathotypes, such as the Mezhgorsky, Rakhovsky, and Bukovinsky, capable of overcoming cultivar resistance.

A typical symptom of infection is the development of tumor-like outgrowths, which change color from white to dark brown or black as they mature, subsequently decaying and emitting an unpleasant odor. In addition to the classic formations, foliar, scab-like, corrugated, and crater-like forms of the disease are distinguished. In breeding programs, molecular markers are used to combat the pathogen, specifically those based on the resistance gene Sen1, as well as the historically known gene D, which is responsible for protection against the pathotype D1 (Dalen).
