Variety traits
Nicotiana tabacum L.
A genetic condition in tobacco that prevents the formation of viable pollen or normal anthers, utilized in seed production to obtain F1 hybrids without the need for manual emasculation.
In the reference 14 varieties crop Tobacco, where this is mentioned in the description.
Cytoplasmic male sterility in tobacco manifests as a qualitative trait where plants can either be pollen-sterile with outwardly normal anthers, or staminal with complete atrophy or reduction of the androecium. To identify lines at early developmental stages, molecular genetic markers are used, such as SNP-based KASP or specific ALP markers, which determine the cytoplasm type.
The use of these lines eliminates the need for labor-intensive manual emasculation in hybrid seed production without affecting the economically valuable traits of the commercial leaf. In breeding work, special attention is paid to minimizing pleiotropic effects and floral developmental anomalies in order to maintain the biological viability of maternal forms.
