Apricot Phytoplasmosis

Prunus armeniaca L.

The main phytoplasmosis of apricot is European stone fruit yellows, caused by the pathogen Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum (group 16SrX). The disease manifests as chlorotic leaf roll, general tree decline, and premature dieback of branches.

In the reference 12 varieties crop Apricot, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the phytoplasma Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum, belonging to the 16SrX group. The term 'stolbur' is not standard for this crop, as it is traditionally applied to diseases of solanaceous crops caused by the 16SrXII group phytoplasma, which is not the dominant pathogen for stone fruits.

Symptoms of the infection include the development of small, chlorotic leaves that characteristically curl, which has been termed chlorotic leaf roll. The degree of symptom manifestation depends on the cultivar and environmental conditions. Specific resistance genes to this phytoplasmosis in apricot have not been described, so the evaluation of cultivars is conducted based on field observations and PCR-based detection of the pathogen.
