Variety traits
Medicago sativa L.
Alfalfa tolerance is the ability of a genotype to maintain productivity and biomass under abiotic stress conditions such as soil salinity, drought, soil acidity, and low temperatures.
In the reference 28 varieties crop Alfalfa, where this is mentioned in the description.
The assessment of alfalfa tolerance is based on the analysis of physiological markers, such as electrolyte leakage levels from membranes, the concentration of proline, soluble sugars, and proteins in tissues, as well as the accumulation of malondialdehyde as an indicator of oxidative stress. For the integral evaluation of cultivars, mathematical methods are employed, combining indices of dry biomass and plant water status into a single coefficient.
The economic significance of tolerance is determined by the crop's ability to maintain yield stability due to a well-developed root system that penetrates to a depth of 3–5 meters. High stress tolerance is critical for stand longevity, the preservation of crown buds during the overwintering period, and the potential for the effective utilization of reclaimed or degraded lands.
