Variety traits
Prunus avium (L.) L.
Sweet cherry yield is a key economic trait measured in tonnes per hectare or kilograms per tree. To objectively evaluate varieties, a productivity index calculated relative to the trunk cross-sectional area is also used.
In the reference 236 varieties crop Sweet cherry, where this is mentioned in the description.
Commercial sweet cherry yield during full bearing ranges from 7–10 to 24–30 tonnes per hectare, reaching up to 32 tonnes with intensive technologies. In less intensive orchards, the productivity of a single tree is considered high when yielding 45–60 kg of fruit.
The stability of the sweet cherry harvest is limited by the winter hardiness of flower buds and resistance to late spring frosts. High varietal productivity is valued in combination with fruit quality, although excessive crop load requires thinning to maintain fruit size and marketability.
