Vegetation period — white cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (White Cabbage Group)

The vegetation period of white cabbage is calculated in days from mass emergence to technical maturity and serves as the main criterion for classifying varieties by maturity groups.

In the reference 173 varieties crop White cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

The duration of the vegetation period determines the classification of cabbage varieties into groups: extra-early (65–100 days), early-maturing (100–115), mid-early (115–130), mid-maturing (130–145), mid-late (145–160), and late-maturing (160 days or more). When using the transplanting method, the count can also start from the moment of transplanting.

The fertilization strategy and the intended use of the harvest depend on the duration of the period. Early varieties form less dense heads for summer consumption and require readily available forms of fertilizers. Late-maturing varieties form larger and denser heads for winter storage and fermentation, requiring higher doses of nutrients.

Climatic factors, such as temperatures rising above 25°C, can slow down growth rates, lengthening the vegetation period, which often leads to deformation of the heads or their cracking if the water regime is disrupted.
