Diseases
Hordeum vulgare L.
A group of barley diseases including seed-borne stripe mosaic, and soil-borne yellow and mild mosaics transmitted by zoospores of the fungus Polymyxa graminis.
In the reference 179 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.
Barley stripe mosaic is caused by the BSMV virus and manifests as V-shaped chlorotic streaks, causing floral sterility and grain shriveling. The disease is characterized by high seed transmissibility and rapid spread through mechanical contact between plants.
Yellow and mild mosaics are caused by the BaYMV and BaMMV viruses, which infect plants in patches at low temperatures. Symptoms include pale yellow spots, leaf deformation, poor tillering, and stunted root systems.
Breeding for resistance to BaYMV and BaMMV is based on the use of rym genes, including rym3 and rym4. Due to the variability of viral pathotypes, breeders use the gene pyramiding method to ensure durable resistance.
