Variety traits

Plum wax bloom

Prunus domestica L.

A natural protective formation on the surface of plum fruits, which serves as a quality indicator during variety testing and protects the harvest from transpiration, pests, and fungal infections.

In the reference 284 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

In plum variety testing methodologies, the intensity of the wax bloom is assessed visually and organoleptically on a scale that includes categories of absent, weak, medium, and strong bloom. With a heavy bloom, rubbing off the protective layer noticeably changes the color intensity of the fruit skin.

The wax bloom performs a hydrophobic function, preventing excessive moisture loss and limiting surface wettability, which hinders pathogen development and pest attachment. At the same time, the presence of an intensive layer can complicate the adhesion of pesticide spray solutions to the fruit, which must be taken into account when planning protective measures.
