Variety traits
Triticum aestivum L.
An important breeding parameter determining lodging resistance, adaptability, and potential yield of a variety. It is measured from the soil surface to the top of the spike, excluding awns, during the period from heading to milk stage.
In the reference 1 139 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
To evaluate the stem height of common wheat, a classification is used that includes groups ranging from super-dwarf (up to 40 cm) to tall (above 120 cm). Short-stemmed varieties in the range of 86–105 cm are considered optimal for achieving high yields and harvesting efficiency.
The trait is highly dependent on environmental conditions, including soil fertility and seeding density. There is a negative correlation between plant height and lodging resistance, as well as a positive correlation between stem growth and winter hardiness, which necessitates a breeding balance between these properties.
