When storing in clamps, pits, or trenches, potato covering involves the sequential application of thermal insulation layers consisting of straw, sawdust, peat, or coniferous branches, followed by covering with a layer of soil. The main purpose of this protection is the thermal insulation of tubers in the absence of permanent storage facilities.

An important technical feature of the covering is the creation of a mound profile for moisture drainage and the installation of intake and exhaust pipes in the clamps. These measures are necessary to ensure ventilation, prevent rotting, and avoid the development of decay during the tuber dormancy period in the soil.

The method of storing planting material directly in the ground involves placing tubers in well-drained areas followed by covering with a layer of soil.
