Winter hardiness of winter barley

Hordeum vulgare L.

A complex indicator of the ability of barley plants to survive under adverse conditions during the autumn-winter-spring period, critically limited by the crop's biological sensitivity to low temperatures.

For winter barley, the critical temperature threshold at the tillering node depth is in the range of -14…-15 °C. When evaluating this trait in breeding, a laboratory freezing method is used, where the key criterion is the death temperature of the tillering node or the percentage of surviving plants after stress exposure.

In field conditions, winter hardiness is assessed as the percentage of surviving plants per 1 m² in the spring relative to the autumn stand density or using a 9-point scale, where 1 point corresponds to total death and 9 points to very high survival. A survival rate of 30–35% is considered the threshold for the possibility of crop regeneration.
