Winter Hardiness of English Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia Mill.

The critical threshold for the aerial part of English lavender is -25°C. Stability is assessed on a 6-point scale by calculating a tissue damage index, with annual shoots being the most vulnerable.

To assess the frost resistance of English lavender, a freezing method is used in the range from -16°C to -25°C, followed by microscopic analysis of the cambium, bark, xylem, and pith. The integrated damage index is calculated taking into account the significance coefficients of each tissue, with the maximum index value corresponding to plant death being 420 points.

Annual shoots exhibit the highest sensitivity to low temperatures, whereas two- and three-year-old shoots possess higher resistance. Under production conditions, plant death is more often triggered not by winter minima, but by recurrent spring frosts during the onset of sap flow, when tissues become saturated with moisture and susceptible to cell wall rupture.
