The winter hardiness of winter triticale is assessed by the percentage of plants that survived winter compared to the number that entered it, as well as by a 5-point expert scoring scale of crop conditions. The classification adopted in breeding includes five levels of resistance: high (86–95% and above), above average (76–85%), moderately resistant (51–75%), weakly resistant (26–50%), and susceptible (less than 25%).
This trait has a direct correlation with yield (r = 0.61–0.72). When cultivating the crop, it is important to consider that triticale is prone to losing hardiness during frequent thaws, becoming vulnerable to subsequent frosts. Successful overwintering also depends on the autumn development of the plants, the level of potassium supply, and the absence of viral infections.
